#FROMWASTE2WONDER

Home: Welcome

INTRODUCTION TO OUR PROJECT ♻

From 'Waste to Wonder' is a class project under our English language lesson on the environmental theme. It is a Project Based Learning which commenced on 5th of May. This 6 week project is spurred by a driving question which is "HOW CAN WE TAKE CARE OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND INSPIRE OTHERS TO HELP US?"Therefore, when we were given the task on how to take care of the environment and also spread the awareness around, our journey began! There were series of discussions, brainstorming, mind-cracking and work division among us. The biggest challenge was to think of the environmental issue that we wanted to work on as there are many issues around the world. As assigned , each of us looked for 5 reading materials and started digging for information. Then came the announced MCO. All our discussions were taken online. We decided the best issue to highlight to society would be on waste and waste management because the ideas and principles of 3R are not yet rooted in our society. We would also like to bring forth 6R concept which is a practice in many developed countries yet alien in ours. We also had conducted an interview session with officers from Department of Environment to help us gain more information regarding the environmental issues. The officers had provided us with more than enough information and also with the help of Puan Misah, an officer from PPD Kinta Utara, we had received more brilliant ideas that can help us tackle this environmental issue that we’re discussing. We carried out a few mini projects which received good feedback from our peers.

WALL E MOVIE 🤖

Nik and Raihan are in- charge of the ‘Movie Night’. We had conducted an activity involving all SMKRPB students as well as for students from the schools. Movie night that ran on June 5, 2021 has received a warm welcome. Prior to this activity, we have provided some materials to attract students so that they can participate in this activity. We have prepared a poster regarding the title of the movie we have chosen which is Wall-e. Apart from that, we  also provided a Google Form for students to write a movie review about the movie they watch. The movie night activity received very good response from Form 5 students and they were very excited about the activity. After carrying out the activity, we found a total of 33 participated consisting of SMKRPB students, alumni and the general public. After the Google Form was released, we received 21 write-ups on the movie. We selected the best four from the 21 reviews. The best four were given special FOODPANDA delivery sponsored by our teacher

AUTHORITIES

In this era of technological advancement and development, polymer materials specifically plastic has been widely used around the world. The use of plastic has played a major role in the packaging process especially in industries that are mainly using plastic as their main resources. For example, food and beverages industries, medical and health care industries and cosmetic industries. These industries took up the usage of plastic because plastics is low in cost, durable, high in water resistivity and it costs lesser energy and heavy chemical requirements to manufacture them. However, the use of plastic has become a disease because it is tarnishing our Mother Nature. Plastic takes up a long period of time to completely decompose because we cannot simply burn them due to its effect that will release toxic chemicals into the air that will pollute the air and harm people that breathe the air. Plastic has also been frequently reported accumulating landfills due to its large quantities. Aquatic wildlife is also suffering because they mistook plastic as food and die due to the plastic’s toxicity that harm the organs of aquatic wildlife. This environmental issue must be controlled to save Mother Nature from constantly suffering.
Several efforts have been done by the government to contain this issue from becoming more serious in the future. Government has established a work force to handle our nation’s environmental health, which is the Ministry of Environment and Water. Under the Ministry of Environment and Water, a department was established in 1975 named Department of Environment (DOE) to prevent, eliminate, control pollution and improve the environment, consistent with the purposes of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 and the regulations thereunder. Other than DOE, the environmental health is also managed by local authorities such as municipal councils and city councils. Other than that, it is mandatory for companies and industries in our country to provide a division in their organization to supervise the environmental health at their workplace. However, plastic management are managed by city councils and the Department of Solid Waste Management under the Ministry of Housing and Local Government. DOE is not involved in the management, collection and the recycling of plastic. They will only take action when plastic is polluting the environment. All the work of managing, collecting and recycling plastic are done by third parties which are local collectors. Due to their hardworking efforts, we should honor their work because they could transform a mere waste into something that can be of worth to the society by inventing a useful product that can be of good use.

CREDIT TO COLLECTOR

Garbage collectors are often looked down upon in our society because it’s considered to be a “dirty job,” but most people don’t know they help us and our environment more than we give them credit for.
